Awareness campaign on sexual abuse of children

Karachi: Aahung, a Karachi-based NGO, launched a nation-wide radio campaign on Tuesday to highlight prevention of child sexual abuse (CSA). The drive is targeted at parents and caregivers, and will run till July 30.

“A number of myths and misconceptions suggest that only girls, and children from lower socio-economic groups are abused.

However, it is estimated that between 15 — 20 per cent of girls and boys from all socio-economic groups in Pakistan are exposed to sexual harassment and abuse before they turn 18,” said Aahung representative, Farhat Firdous.

The Aahung representative maintained that many cases go under reported or undetected, but it is safe to assume that the statistics are probably much higher. Through this campaign, Aahung wants to dispel some of the prevalent myths, and provide parents and caregivers with simple strategies that can go a long way in the prevention of child sexual abuse.
