Attacks on Jang, Geo assailed

TOKYO: Japan International Press Club, a popular organisation across the world working for the freedom of press and for protection of journalists, Monday condemned in strong words the incidents of setting a few copies of newspapers on fire and attacks on Jang Group offices in some cities of Sindh.

In a statement, it said that the Jang Group is a biggest media group of Pakistan and efforts are being made to stop this group from providing information to the masses which is tantamount to stop freedom of press.

In the statement, it was demanded of the Pakistan government to immediately arrest the perpetrators of the attacks on the Jang Group and also take steps to ensure protection to the journalists and offices of the Jang Group in near future.

Our correspondents add from Taxila, Bagh: Protest demonstrations were held on Monday at Chowk Sarai Kala, Texila and in Bagh against the incidents of burning a few copies of daily Jang and The News and attacks on Geo offices in interior Sindh.

The protest demonstration was held in Taxila under the auspicious of Pakistan Press Forum, which was led by its president Syed Iftar Kazmi. Addressing the participants, Kazmi said that burning of a few copies of daily Jang and Akhbar-e-Jehan in Sakrand is highly condemnable. Other speakers including Syed Mazhar Hussain Shah, Abdul Wahid and Zulfiqar said that those who create hurdles in the way of mediamen are living in the fools’ paradise. They demanded of the government to take notice of the burning incidents forthwith and arrest the culprits.

The journalists in Bagh also strongly condemned the attacks on daily Jang and Geo offices during their protest in Sajjad Shaheed Press Club in Bagh on Monday.

They said that efforts are being made to suppress the freedom of press through such attacks under a conspiracy. They demanded of the government to take immediate notice of the incident and give exemplary punishment to the attackers. They said that the nefarious designs of the perpetrators would never succeed through such tactics.

President Sajjad Shaheed Press Club Syed Zahid Gilani, Pervezul Hassan Tahir, Tahir Abbasi, Raja Ashraf, Afraz Shah, Raja Abdul Hafeez and other journalists spoke on the occasion.
