Army’s help sought for newsman’s release

PESHAWAR- Family of The News correspondent Saeed Zaman Afridi, who was arrested by the political administration, has appealed to the military authorities for his release on humanitarian grounds.

In a press release the family members of Saeed Zaman said that, according to the doctor at the Agency Headquarters Hospital, Saeed had been suffering from paraplegia with anxiety neurosis and his health was in poor condition. He has a long history of health complications like high-level cholesterol and gastric ulcer, sources said. The doctors, they added, feared that if he was kept in further confinement, his cholesterol level might go up which would expose him to heart attack, paralysis and other serious health hazards.

The newsman’s family resented that the press community had kept silent over Saeed Zaman’s arrest and asked the Amnesty International and other human right groups to come forward in support of Saeed Zaman.

Giving details the family members said that Saeed was arrested by the Khyber Agency political authorities on the complaint of Major Abid of Khyber Rifles, when the two exchanged hot words over a militia action in Teddy Bazaar,. Jamrud, a week ago, which the newsman wanted to cover.
