ARD files two amendments

ISLAMABAD – The Alliance for Restoration of Democracy on August 2 filed two separate amendments with the National Assembly to the proposed Defamation (Amendment) Bill-2004.

ARD Parliamentary Group Secretary Izhar Amrohvi told Business Recorder in Islamabad that through the amendments, ARD proposed that the bill be referred to the Council of Islamic Ideology, as the sentence, envisaged in it, appeared to be un-Islamic.

Moreover, the alliance proposed that the bill, being of highly sensitive nature, should be advertised and public opinion sought thereon, prior to its approval by the Parliament, he said.

Prime Minister Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, taking note of boycott of the National Assembly proceedings by the newsmen on Friday, assured the journalist community that the bill would not be passed until a consensus was evolved on it.

The government introduced the bill in the Lower House of the Parliament on Thursday and Speaker Chaudhry Amir Hussain had referred it to the House Standing Committee.
