Appointment of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority chairman illegal: Senate body

ISLAMABAD: A parliamentary panel on Thursday termed the appointment of PTA Chairman Farooq Awan illegal and directed the officials of the cabinet division to give complete details in this regard and appointment criteria of PTA chairman.

During the meeting of the sub-committee of the Senate Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication that met with Senator Malik Rafique Rajwana in the chair discussed the appointment of PTA Chairman Farooq Awan and removal of former Universal Service Funds (USF) CEO Riaz Ashar Siddiqui.

The committee showed concerns over the appointment of PTA chairman and said that it was done on Saturday, a gazette holiday, showing how much this process was transparent. Humayun Mandokhel said that PTA chairman was also involved in billion of rupees scam while board appointed him as chairman of the regulatory body. The committee observed that PTA chairman should be any senior person with sufficient technical background but board appointed him ignoring the senior members which is beyond understanding.

The committee showed concern over the insufficient record about the appointment of the PTA chairman and directed the officials of cabinet division to ensure their presence in the meeting with complete record.

The committee also raised the issue of removal of Ex-CEO Universal Service Funds (USF) Riaz Ashar Siddiqui and said that former CEO was removed without any solid allegations. The senators said that details provided by the officials regarding board of director meeting about removal of Riaz Siddiqui showed that during the meeting no allegations against former USF CEO.
