APNS condemns attack on newsman

KARACHI- The All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) has condemned the attack on a newsman of Quetta and called upon the Balochistan government to take action against the attackers.

Kazi Asad Abid, secretary-general of the APNS, in a, statement expressed concern over the attack on Majeed Asghar, editor of daily Jang Quetta, and said such incidents had become quite common, which was alarming for the functioning of the Press in the country.

It was also distressing that the law enforcement agencies had so far failed to check this trend, he added. He said that press freedom was essential for the successful functioning of civil society, especially at this important juncture in the nations’ history. It was the duty of the administration to protect the print media from such elements, who intend to dictate the press against performance of their professional duty to keep their readers and the public at large informed.

He regretted that despite the lapse of over a week, the Balochistan government had failed to take concrete steps to apprehend the culprits involved in the attack.

The APNS urged the provincial government to take immediate cognizance of the issue and ensure that ‘the armed attackers were brought to book without further delay.
