American media and Islam
LAHORE- There is a common perception in America that the Muslims are fundamentalists and terrorists, which is due to ignorance about Islam and the Muslims by the Americans. This was stated by Head of the Department of Religious Studies, University of North Carolina, USA, Dr. Carl W. Ernst, while delivering lecture on the topic of “American media and Islam” at Lahore Press Club.
He said the media of developed nations has also played a role in creating this image. He said that common Americans know only about ‘Hammas’ and Usama Bin Laden because US media gives so much coverage to them and portrays them as terrorists. He said since Americans do not know about Islamic scholars and Islamic culture, their approach about Islam and Muslims is highly negative.
He said that there are five million Muslims in the US whom 2.5 million Muslims are immigrants. He stated that 40 percent of these immigrant Muslims belong to South Asia. These immigrants could not clarify the concept about the Muslims and Islam.
