Karachi: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain demanded on Friday that special measures should be taken to protect the life and property of journalists across the country.

Addressing a crowded news conference by phone at Azizabad’s Lal Qila ground, he said the need of the hour was to protect the life and property of journalists, as a number of them had already lost their lives while performing their professional duties.

He also prayed to Almighty Allah to protect all journalists.

Replying to queries, the MQM chief said that he was thankful to newsmen from the core of his heart as they, despite leveling allegations against the MQM, also demonstrate their compassion towards the party by attending its programmes.

At the outset, he requested the members of both the print and electronic media to help him in creating awareness among the masses about his messages pertaining to the country’s solidarity and rule of law.

Worker’s killing slammed

The MQM chief and the Coordination Committee condemned the murder of a worker of the party’s Qasba-Aligarh Sector, Dilawar Khan, and termed it an “act of cowardice”.

Expressing their deep grief and sorrow over the killing of Khan, Hussain and the Coordination Committee prayed to Almighty Allah to rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage to the bereaved family members to bear this irreparable loss.

The committee described the incident a conspiracy to disrupt the city’s peace, and said that some anti-social elements, which were bent upon destroying the peace of the city, had been continuously targeting MQM office-bearers, workers and its sympathisers merely to achieve their nefarious designs.

It demanded of Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad and caretaker Chief Minister (retd) Justice Zahid Kurban Alavi to order the immediate arrest of the culprits and give them exemplary punishment.

It also urged them to help bring an end to killings of MQM office-bearers, workers and sympathisers.
