All Pakistan Newspaper Employees, Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists condemn police baton (lathi) charge on newsmen

KARACHI- All Pakistan Newspaper Employees Confederation (Apnec) and Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) have condemned police baton charge on newsmen in Faisalabad on Sunday in which several journalists were injured.

In a joint statement, Apnec Chairman Abdul Hameed Chhapra, Secretary General Pervez Shaukat, PFUJ President I. H. Raashed, Senior Vice President Chaudhry Rahmatullah Shamsi and acting Secretary General Abdullah Jan criticised the treatment meted out to the newsmen in Faisalabad.

They said Apnec and PFUJ would like to make it clear that media men and their brothers in uniform have their own perception of issues and both have all the right to have them. The press will report events as they see and in line with truth and reality. That is what honesty and professionalism demand, they observed.

They felt if the government has any complaint against journalists, the course to adopt is recourse to the judiciary.

They demanded punishment to police personnel who ordered and implemented the action on journalists and compensation to the victims. As for the Information Minister Nisar Memon’s assurance that an inquiry will be conducted into the incident by Punjab government, the Apnec and PFUJ office bearers said the government of Punjab is itself a party.
