All cell phone operators told to follow SOP in issuing SIMs

LAHORE (September 11 2007): All mobile telephone operators have been asked to submit a report whether or not their system for issuing new SIMS is working according to the ministry’s instructions and standard operating procedure (SOP) of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

SIM cannot be issued and mobile connection activated without production of the computerised national identity card by subscribers and signing of a contract agreement form provided by the company before becoming a family member of any mobile phone company. Operators are also bound to confirm and verify the antecedents of CNIC from NADRA data base within 15 working days.

Senior officials of all mobile telephone operators, in a meeting held here at PTA zonal office, have been instructed by the Zonal Director to ensure SOP implementation issued by the authority. They have also been directed to update their data base and confirm the antecedents of subscribers accordingly.
