Agencies detain The News reporter in Peshawar
PESHAWAR: A reporter of The News, Delawar Jan, was taken away by a security agency from his office here on Tuesday evening and detained until he disclosed the source of a news item which he had filed on Monday about a military operation in Buner.
The reporter refused to disclose the source and the officials of the top security agency were not ready to release him. A team of reporters was negotiating with them until late on Tuesday night to secure his release.
Group Editor of The News, Shaheen Sehbai, has in a statement, urged the security officials and the Army high command not to target journalists if they cannot keep their operations a secret. They should look inwards and plug leakages in their system, instead of shooting the messenger. Delawar Jan, the Group Editor said, had done nothing unprofessional or irresponsible and he should be released immediately.
