Accused claims innocence in girl rape, murder case

KARACHI: One of the accused facing trial in a three-year-old girl’s rape and murder case denied all charges before an anti-terrorism court on Wednesday and alleged that the police did not conduct an impartial investigation.
Traffic police constables Bashir Ahmed and Noor Mohammad have been charged with kidnapping the three-year-old girl, Sana, on July 3 near her house in Korangi. They allegedly subjected her to a sexual assault and later killed her.
Accused Bashir Ahmed was brought before Judge Syed Hasan Shah Bukhari of the ATC-I from prison and the court recorded his statement.
The accused, in his statement, denied all allegations levelled against him by the prosecution.
He stated that he was innocent, as the police had framed him in the case.
He said that the investigation officer of the case did not conduct an impartial investigation.
The accused informed the court that he would produce two witnesses in his defence on Thursday.
The hearing was adjourned till Thursday when the court would record the statements of defence witnesses. The statement of another accused, Noor Mohammad, could not be recorded on Wednesday due to the absence of his counsel. The court would record his statement on Thursday.
According to the prosecution, the deceased’s body was recovered from a manhole near the FTC building on a lead given by the accused following their arrest on July 5.
A case (FIR 331/2009) was registered against the accused under Sections 364 (kidnapping or abducting a person under the age of 10), 376 (punishment for rape), 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intent) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 6(b) punishable under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 at the Zaman Town police station.
