Abid lauds Sindhi Press role

SUKKUR- The Secretary-General All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS) Qazi Asad has complemented the Sindhi Press for their success, which they achieved with so many sacrifices. He particularly referred to the efforts made regarding Kalabagh Dam.

He was speaking at a reception hosted by Sukkar Union of Journalists in his honour to celebrate his election as Secretary General APNS for the sixth time. Qazi Asad Abid advised the government for taking steps to allow newspapers access under the freedom of Information to classified documents within 24 hours. He said the national and regional press always behaved with responsibility, and concealing classified information from them detrimental to the country. He referred to Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report, which was made public after 30 years.

He also called for making the proposed Press Council a free and independent organisation so that it could play an effective role. He said the press council should compromise journalists and editors, free from outside pressure including the government.

Earlier, former Senator Imdad Awan, Senior Superintended Police (SSP) Sukkur Munir Ahmed Chishti, Nazim Baloch, Hyderabad Press Club President Lala Rehman Sammo, Mumtaz Bukhari, Shahid Ali, and General Secretary Sukkur Union of Journalists Khawaja Jawaid also spoke on the occasion.

Kazi Asad Abid also attended a dinner hosted by Sukkur small traders, and a lunch by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senior leader Jameel Saheto.

On this occasion PPP Sindh president Nisar Khuro and former Deputy opposition leader in the National Assembly, Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah also spoke.
