ISLAMABAD: Minister for Interior Rehman Malik said on Sunday there were one million unregistered SIMs when he took charge of the ministry out of which 90 percent had been blocked now.

The minister was speaking at the concluding session of the conference on “Gender Discrimination in Media and Capacity Building for Female Journalists” arranged by the National Press Club (NPC).

Rehman Malik urged the citizens to report untraced numbers to control the criminal activities.

He said Pakistan is facing multiple threats, adding that these threats could be countered to national unity. “The suicide attacks not only scare away the foreign investors but also discourage local investors,” the minister said. He said terrorists are the enemies of the society and humanity.

About the drone attacks, Rehman Malik said this issue could be resolved only though diplomatic efforts. He said the government was working to stop the drone attacks as even the F-16 aircraft could not bring down the drones.

He said the Pakistan Army and the nation were fully united against the menace of terrorism.

Rehman Malik said the infiltration from Afghanistan side into Balochistan had been curtailed.

The minister paid tributes to Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for initiating steps and policies for empowering women.

“Women are rendering great contributions in diversified fields of life. The contributions of Speaker National Assembly, Dr Fehmida Mirza, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar and Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Farzana Raja are glowing examples of women empowerment,” he said.
