80pc Pakistani women living below poverty line

Karachi – The Sindh Minister for Women Development ,Dr. Saeeda Malik, has said that 30 per cent population of the country was living below the poverty line and among them 80 per cent were women.

Addressing a seminar on “Work for Eradication of Poverty” jointly organised by All Pakistan Trade Union Congress and International Labour organisation (ILO) on Thursday,she said that our main objective should be spreading of awareness among the people in order to eliminate the poverty and illiteracy from the society on urgent basis. She further said, health, education, clean drinking water and increase in the literacy rate, are the top priorities of her government and for this purpose a special grant has been allocated.

She said that without the participation of Non-Governmental Agencies (NGOs) and of people, the government could not handle the welfare projects alone. She said that our women were facing a number of problems and most of the problems were due to poverty.

The General Secretary of All Pakistan Trade Union Congress ,Shaukat Ali, highlighted the projects initiated by ILL in a bid to eliminate poverty. Prof. Shafi Malik, SP Lodhi, Ubaid-ur-Rehman Usmani, Fasihul Karim Siddique and the Sindh Chief Economist ,Abdul Ghaffar Peerzada, also addressed the gathering.
