490 PTV employees regularised: Gilani eulogises role of media

Islamabad: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday eulogised the role of media in creating awareness among the masses against extremism and terrorism.

Speaking at the ceremony organised in connection with regularisation of 490 Pakistan Television employees, he said, “our media created awareness among the people against the terrorism and extremism with great responsibility.

Gilani also distributed confirmation letters among regularised employees and also promised to regularise remaining as well.

Addressing the ceremony after distribution of regularisation letters among the employees of PTV, Gilani eulogised the role of media creating awareness among the people against extremism and terrorism and assured full support of the government for a free media in the country.

Gilani said that the government repealed all the anti-media laws after coming into power to ensure free media in the country, as it firmly believes that restriction on freedom of expression creates suffocation in the society.

Prime minister said great revolution has been witnessed in the media during last few years with a number of private channels coming into the market.

Gilani urged the managements and workers of the PTV to project a balance view to the people by providing equal opportunity to the government and opposition viewpoints.

The prime minister was informed that a revenue generation of Rs 5.35 million through telephonic transmission has been donated to the people of flood affected areas.

Gilani also announced launching of PTV sport channel in January 2012 which would provide physical and mental entertainment to the youth of the country.

He said that PTV was a profitable organisation even in the days of economic recession.

Earlier, speaking at the function Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Fardous Ashiq Awan said that all the 490 employees of the PTV have been regularised on merit through a transparent process.

Remaining 380 employees would also be legalised soon, said minister adding that PTV role was to protect the ideological boundaries of the country which it has been performing since its foundation.

The minister said that process of PTV expansion would start from tomorrow with the setting up PTV station in Multan, hometown of Prime Minister.
