45-day timeline irrelevant, govt tells PML-N

By Asim Yasin

ISLAMABAD: The government team seems to have convinced the PML-N in the very first meeting of the committee formed to implement the 10-point national agenda that the 45-day period is irrelevant as economic restructuring and overhaul need time.

At the same time, it agreed to those issues that could be resolved in a short span of time. The first meeting of the PML-N’s five-member team, headed by Senator Ishaq Dar, with the government team, headed by Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, ended on a positive note, agreeing that solution of major economic problems requires more time.

Dr Hafeez Sheikh urged the PML-N team to come up with an alternative rather than insisting on continuation of subsidies. He said the government was already moving in the direction of restructuring the state-owned enterprises and in the first phase, restructuring of four state-owned enterprises will be undertaken after cabinet’s approval.

The PML-N says permanent rules to appoint heads of theseentities should be framed and, if necessary, legislation should be enacted for the purpose. It also wants parliamentary oversight of these appointments on the pattern of parliamentary oversight on appointment of judges of the higher courts.

The government team is of the view that such changes require legislation for which parliament is the proper forum. “The issue should be discussed in parliament and the government will accept whatever parliament legislates in this regard,” sources quoting the government team said.
