33pc seats for women at all levels sought

ISLAMABAD: Speakers here demanded that the government should reserve 33 per cent seats for women at all levels of legislation. They said seats should also be reserved for women from minorities.

The ‘Political policy dialogue’ was organised by National Commission on the Status of Women. The speakers said the government should amend the law to allow more women to contest elections.

In their recommendations, the participants called upon the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ensure holding of elections in political parties and make it mandatory for them to reserve slots for women within their ranks.

MNA Yasmin Rehman said law was being amended to increase women’s participation in local governments and efforts were also underway to enhance the role of women in mainstream politics.

However, the participants, including women office-bearers of political parties and representatives of NGOs, expressed a gloomy picture of the state of affairs within political parties regarding women empowerment.
