309 women released from nine Punjab prisons

LAHORE, July 21 2006: The Prisons Department, Punjab, has released on bail 309 women prisoners from nine different jails of the province since July 10, in compliance with the Presidential Ordinance. Inspector-General of Prisons (IGP) Punjab, Capt (retd) Sarfaraz Ahmad Mufti told APP here on July 20 that 555 women prisoners from a total of 710 had applied for bail to competent courts and 309 of them had been released so far. The IGP said, “All DIGs of Prisons and Superintendents of Central and District Jails across the province had been directed to contact District and Sessions Judges and District Coordination Officers of their respective areas, to arrange the visit of judicial officers to local jails for granting bail to eligible female prisoners.”

He said that DIG (Inspection) Salik Jalal has been appointed Liaison Officer to coordinate with all relevant authorities to ensure compliance of the Ordinance.
