30 held in Pearl case, 8 being questioned

ISLAMABAD- The government has arrested 30 persons in connection with the kidnapping of Daniel Pearl, The Wall Street Journal journalist, missing since January 23.

In an inter-provincial meeting presided over by the secretary interior here on Thursday, Inspector General (IG) Sindh, in his report to the federal government said eight persons were still under interrogation and the others have been released. The meeting was attended by all four home secretaries and the IGs.

According to sources, an important agenda of the meeting related to review of the steps taken so far to check and curb the activities of Jihadi organizations.

Steps to be taken in the light of the policy guidelines set by President General Pervez Musharraf were also reviewed, a source said.

During the meeting, a source said, the IG Sindh informed the federal government about the increasing law and order problems created by the Afghan refugees. The IG Sindh asked for their early deportation following restoration of peace in Afghanistan.

Sources said that the decision to check the increasing incidents of carjacking in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Balochistan also came under review.
