2,050 women apply for Yellow Cabs in Punjab

LAHORE: Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif has said that the Yellow Cab Scheme will not only help eliminate poverty but will also promote local industry and provide better transport facilities to the masses.

He said that the Ashiana Scheme would be adopted as a ‘model’ for scrutinising particulars of the applicants for the Yellow Cab Scheme. He said balloting of the Yellow Cab Scheme would be held in all divisional headquarters and in the first phase, balloting would be held on August 29 in DG Khan, Multan and Rawalpindi divisions, in other three divisions on September 7 in the second phase whereas it would be done in the remaining three divisions on September 10. Distribution of vehicles would start from October 10, he said.

The chief minister was presiding over a meeting regarding the Yellow Cab Scheme here on Monday. He said people had taken keen interest in the scheme and 67,879 applications had been received for the vehicles from across the province of which 2,050 applications were from women. A large number of people belonging to rural districts have given applications for yellow cabs. Keeping in view the interest of people in Bolan vehicles, the quota of Bolan vehicles had been enhanced from 20 percent to 40 percent whereas 60 percent vehicles would be Mehran. Quota of 40 percent vehicles had been allocated for 31 percent population of Southern Punjab.

The CM said the Punjab government was billions of rupees had been allocated for the public welfare projects. He said the projects of provision of laptops to 100,000 students, loans on soft terms and distribution of 20,000 yellow cabs would also enable the educated youth to stand on their own feet.

He said that an effective system of training of driving should be evolved for successful applicants which also included the aspect of social behaviour with the passengers. He directed the Transport secretary to give a detailed briefing within next two days regarding driving training, issuance of driving license and other matters. He further directed that most simple ceremonies should be held at divisional headquarters for balloting of yellow cab vehicles.
