Pakistan Press Foundation is concerned over the warning issued to journalists in Uganda

Pakistan Press Foundation

Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) in a letter to Ruhakana Rugunda, Prime Minister of Uganda, expressed concern over the warning issued by the Ugandan authorities to journalists regarding covering of the protests.

PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in his letter urged the government of Uganda to treat protests as a part of the news and not to intimidate journalists to keep them from pursuing their duties.

According to Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Uganda’s political opposition has called for nationwide protests on May 12 while Ugandan Minister for Information and National Guidance Jim Muhwezi warned journalists, on May 5, that any news outlet that reports on opposition protests could face closure. All live broadcast of defiance activities were ordered to be stopped. And the media houses which would continue to cover them would risk having their licenses revoked. Coverage through social media is also subject to punishment.
