Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) in a letter to Dilma Rousseff, President of Brazil, expressed concern over the shooting on the Brazilian radio journalist, Jair Pereira Teixeira.

PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in his letter urged the government of Brazil to pursue active investigation in this matter and prosecute all those responsible to ensure that Teixeira can continue his work without any fear.

According to Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Jair Pereira Teixeira, 45, who uses the radio name Jair Kovalick, went to the bar with a friend after attending an Easter celebration where he was shot three times in the arm and on the back. The two assailants, who shot him, flew from the scene.

Jair Pereira Teixeira reported on crime and corruption in Forquilha, a city in northeastern Ceará state. He has been a presenter at Rádio Pioneira for around eight years. Teixeira took a break for three months late last year after he was threatened and warned to lie low and keep his mouth shut.

Police arrested two suspects; Bruno Ilário de Sousa, 26, and a 17-year-old. Both confessed to participating in the attack and said they targeted him because he named them as drug traffickers on his radio program. One is in jail and the other is in a young offenders’ institute.

The attack marked the second time in less than a year that a radio journalist was shot in Ceará state. Gleydson Carvalho was killed last August while presenting a program on Radio Liberdade FM in Camocim.
