The sub-committee of Senate Standing Committee on Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage on Monday observed that not only the government but also owners of media houses are equally responsible for ensuring safety and welfare of media persons in the country. Senator Mushahid Ullah Khan, convenor of the sub-committee while presiding over the meeting said that the responsibility of journalists’ welfare lies with media houses’ owners.

The committee decided to invite representatives of the All Pakistan Newspaper Society (APNS), Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE), Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA), Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and Minister of Information and Broadcasting to the next meeting for holding meaningful discussion over the Bill for their recommendations to ensure protection and welfare of journalists, he said.

President PFUJ, Afzal Butt, said the bill should be further amended to ensure protection and provide help for resolution of issues related to journalists. He suggested that the meeting of the committee should be arranged in all provincial capitals in order to take viewpoint of journalists across the country.

Senator Rubina Khalid said that appointments in media houses should be made keeping in view the qualification of people; consequently, media will not have negative impact on society. While criticising the quality of morning shows on private TV channels, she said that the morning shows are badly affecting our society. A senior official said that following the passage of the 18th amendment, this matter has now become a provincial subject thus the federal government cannot make a legislation on the matter. Aftab, a legal expert, said that at first the federal government should make a legislation for Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) and then provinces could make a legislation in this regard.
