DISCONNECT BETWEEN MEDIA OWNERS, JOURNALISTS AFFECTING QUALITY OF JOURNALISM

Islamabad: Disconnect between media owners, editors, bureau chiefs and the working journalists was not only affecting the quality of reporting but also the state of journalism in Pakistan. This was stated by Muhammad Ziauddin, a senior journalist on the first day of the 4th National Media Conference.

He said that commercialization of the media was also behind the falling standards of the media profession. While speaking at the inaugural session senior journalist Arif Nizami said that in some cases the proprietaries (Seths) do not know anything about the journalism which creates gap between the management and the working journalists.

Nizami also said that electronic media was showing what the public wanted to see and in his opinion public was more interested in celebrity divorces. Rashed Rehman the institution of professional editor was vital but nowadays most of the proprietaries have taken over the job which has affected the working of print media.

Gulmina Bilal Ahmad, Executive Director of Individualland stated that media houses should invest in their staff for training and give protection to them. The four journalists hailing from Baluchistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were awarded shields and a cash award of Rs 50,000 each.
