Dar chairs meeting on climate change

Finance Minister, Mohammad Ishaq Dar on Friday chaired a meeting to determine Pakistan’s strategy for coping with the challenge of climate change. Senior officials of the Ministry of Climate Change, Ministry of Planning and Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance and other related departments attended the meeting, said a statement.

The Secretary Ministry of Climate Change informed the meeting that Pakistan is a party to UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Pakistan’s response on the subject would be submitted after due consideration, at the forthcoming UN Conference on Climate Change being held at Paris from November 30 to December 11, he added. The meeting considered Pakistan’s current level of emissions as well as the need for international support in terms of funding and technology for emission control in future.

The meeting noted that Pakistan was among the ten most affected countries due to the phenomenon of climate change. It may be added that this year would be the 21st yearly session of the Conference of the Parties to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 11th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The conference objective is to achieve a legal binding and universal agreement on climate, from all the nations of the world.
