13 more killed in Karachi target killings

KARACHI: Thirteen people, including three Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) activists, a deputy district officer (DDO), education, and an officer of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) were killed in the city on Tuesday, writes Salis bin Perwaiz.

Police officials said that Deputy Director Education of SITE, Abdul Mohiuddin, was gunned down in the afternoon near the Bara Board in Pak Colony. Pak Colony SHO Abdul Waheed Awan said Mohiuddin was heading towards the Garden area in his car when two men on a motorcycle opened fire on him. The police took him to the Civil Hospital, Karachi, (CHK), where he was pronounced dead.

The victim suffered three bullet wounds to his upper torso. Mohiuddin was a resident of City Railway Colony was a member of Sindh Council of the Awami National party (ANP). “The body has been handed over to the heirs, who will take it to Buner for the funeral,” the police officer said.

Meanwhile, an FIA officer was gunned down in Saudabad, Malir. SP Irfan Bhutto of the Shah Faisal Division said 32-year-old Danish, a resident of Millat Town, was standing outside his home with his wife when two men on a motorcycle opened fire on him. A passer-by, Noman, also suffered bullet injuries in the attack. The injured were moved to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where Danish succumbed to his injuries while Nauman survived. Danish suffered multiple bullet wounds to his upper torso. The SP said the police had found 20 9mm pistol bullet shells at the spot.

“Danish was earlier posted at the FIA Hyderabad Office. A few months ago, he had himself got transferred to Karachi, and there were reports that his life was in danger.”Three MQM activists were also killed on Tuesday in deadly attacks. In the first incident, an office of the MQM’s Muttahida Muzafati Organising Committee was attacked in Agra Taj Colony, Lyari. Two MQM activists, Naved and Salman Soomro, were killed while two others were injured. The injured and bodies were taken to the CHK.

The third MQM worker was gunned down in Musharraf Colony late at night. Police said Javed alias Cablewala was attacked outside his home.

Meanwhile, an MQM unit office was attacked in Baldia No3. Police said two men on a motorcycle opened fire at the office and then hurled a homemade grenade there. Four MQM activists were injured in the attack and taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. A nearby Nadra office was also damaged by the explosion.

In Sector 4-J of Khwaja Ajmer Nagri, an MQM supporter, Mairaj, was shot and injured. He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was in a serious condition.Meanwhile, the owner of a restaurant was shot dead and four others injured in Nanakwara, Risala. Police said Akram alias Nehariwala was sitting at his restaurant, Cafe Hasan, when two men on a motorcycle opened fire on him. Four others were injured in the attack. They were taken to the CHK where Akram expired while the others survived. The victim had suffered multiple bullet wounds to his upper torso.

Police investigators said Akram was receiving death threats from a group of extortionists.Hanif Ghanchi was shot dead in PIB Colony police remits. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Nasir Lodhi of New Town Division said that Hanif was the resident of same area. He was shot at and injured on Tuesday night in Meena Bazaar by two armed men riding on a motorcycle.

He was moved to JPMC where he was pronounced dead. The deceased had received three bullet wounds on his upper torso which became the cause of his death. The police had also found empty bullet shells of 9mm pistol from the crime scene.

SDPO Lodhi termed the murder of Ghanchi as part of target killing and added that he was also a police informer, which might be the cause of his murder. However, he said police will also investigate other aspects. A case was reported and investigation is underway.

In Memon Goth police remits, two tortured and bullet riddle bodies were found on Tuesday morning.SHO Rao Khalid of Memon Goth police station said that the bodies were found lying near Ansari Bridge on the Super Highway.

The police had shifted the bodies to JPMC for post-mortem. The SHO said that the deceased were unidentified till Tuesday night. He added that the victims were kidnapped by criminals from an unknown place. They were shot dead, before subjecting to torture, and later their bodies were thrown in the area.

A case was reported and investigation is underway Separately, Rehmat Khan, who ran construction material business, was gunned down in Sector 12-E, Baldia Town. In another case, 28-year-old police constable Rizwan Kayani was stabbed to death outside his home in SITE-A, Metroville.

The constable was posted at the Razzakabad Training Centre. Police said a suspect had been arrested. Another body was found near the KMC Workshop, Risala. Police said the victim was tortured and later shot dead. In the Kalri police remits, unidentified armed men killed dismissed head constable Sarwar alias Chaman Late on Tuesday night.

SHO Chand Khan Niazi said that Sarwar was passing from Mirza Adam Khan road when armed men sprayed his body with bullets. He was moved to the Civil Hospital, where he died. The SHO added that Sarwar was earlier arrested in six cases and presently he was attached with the banned People’s Aman Committee.
