‘Pak-Afghan joint media strategy can be evolved to fight terrorism’

ISLAMABAD: New avenues can be explored to evolve a Pak-Afghan joint media strategy to fight terrorism and to change the extremist mindset.

The was said in a meeting between Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira and his Afghan counterpart Dr Sayed Makhdoom Raheen who called on him, along with an Afghan media delegation, in his office on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Kaira said, “Let us work together to build a better future for the region and media has to play the role of a catalyst in defeating the radical mindset.” He said both countries should explore common grounds for enhancing cooperation and media had to remain in the forefront in transforming people’s minds. Pakistan is ready to extend maximum cooperation to Afghanistan in this field, he added. Kaira hoped that the visit of Dr Raheen would prove a key event in better bilateral media collaboration between the two brotherly Muslim nations who share a long geographical border as well.

The minister said that Pakistan had historically provided trade facilities to Afghanistan, but there was still a need to increase bilateral trade.

“Pakistan and Afghanistan share religion, history, culture and are geographically linked like twin brothers,” he added. He said Pakistan had always supported Afghanistan and such brotherly gestures could not be forgotten. Dr. Raheen also said that Allama Iqbal, Pakistan’s national poet, was also widely respected and read in Afghanistan as he also wrote in Farsi and had great love for Afghan nation.

The Afghan minister thanked Pakistani counterpart for extending invitation to him to visit Pakistan and he also invited Kaira to visit Afghanistan.
