‘Internet users to increase 16pc by 2009Â’

KARACHI, June 13 2005: Internet users comprising a mere one per cent of the total population of Pakistan are expected to increase by 16 per cent by the year 2009, Chief Operating Officer of Cybernet and Convener, Internet Service Providers, Ansar ul Haq, said while addressing a seminar.

The event ‘New Trends in Internet Use’ was organised by Marketing Association Pakistan, Orient Advertising, PASHA and others.

Ansar mentioned that the market of advertising done through Internet had reached a volume of $3 billion in the US and increasing at a pace of 26 per cent annually. He said Internet advertising is expected to grow at a speed of 35 per cent in India during 2005 and would register an estimated earning of $270 million.

According to him, in Pakistan the online advertising is rising at 33 per cent annually, adding that Singapore topped the list, making optimum use of information technology and online facilities while the US could be placed at seventh position. The expert also mentioned that globally the current pace of electronic marketing is
2.6 per cent, adding that Pakistan government need to support measures required to avail opportunities at international level.

He also mentioned that ratio of Internet users in India was four per cent as compared to 68 per cent in the US. According to him, during the last three years 66 internet service providers companies have closed down their businesses and that the business which was registering 100 per cent progress till 1994-95 has shrunk to 12 per cent.
