‘Govt taking steps to promote access to information culture’
Karachi: The Sindh government is committed to promoting a culture of access to information in order to facilitate people and it is mulling over to bring a law in this regard, said Sindh Minister for Information, Shazia Marri.
She was speaking at a seminar entitled ‘Poverty and Investigative Reporting’ organised by the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) in collaboration with Panos South Asia at the Arabian Country Club here on Thursday.
She said that journalism was incomplete without investigative and research-based reporting. Quoting the example of developed countries, she said that they also excelled in the field of investigative journalism.
Marri said this is the first time that the provincial government had allocated funds for the welfare of journalists and added that these funds would be utilised through press clubs.
She said that steps were also being taken for the welfare of photojournalists. Commenting on the significance of photojournalism, she said that it presented news story in a pictorial shape. She said that news photos showed more details than the written reports.
The minister applauded the efforts of PPF for training journalists and raising their voice for press freedom.
Later, the Sindh information minister distributed certificates amongst the seminar participants. PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali, senior journalist Muhammad Idrees Bakhtiar and Absar Aalam also spoke.
