‘Govt to provide justice to women’

KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Women Wing Sindh Information Secretary, Sharmila Farooqui, said here on Saturday that the government is committed to provide full protection and justice to needy women in Karachi and other parts of the country, besides providing legal assistance to rape victim Mukhtaran Mai in her decision to file a review petition in the court.

“Women in Karachi are performing their duties with dignity and courage after the government enacted the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act and passed the Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Bill last year. The government has also established a women police station in Karachi and more such stations will be established across Sindh,” she said in a statement.

Sharmila said the government was determined to implement the vision of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto for empowerment of women and had taken significant initiatives for their social, political and economic empowerment.

She asked women parliamentarians to come up with concrete measures and help women needing any legal or other social help in the society. Sharmila encouraged women to come forward and contribute to the national progress besides fighting against those who are committing brutalities on them and stopping them from getting education. She said women belonging to all sections of the society should make efforts to change the mindset of the men who are committing violence on women.

Sharmila said that the PPP government in collaboration with social and human rights organisations was sensitizing police to end all types of violence against women. The government will establish women centres in Larkana, Sukkur, Hyderabad and other districts of Sindh to rehabilitate women. She said the women could play a major role in reforming the society.
